Basketball
Normally played indoors for competitive matches, outdoor basketball facilities are commonly installed as part of a multi use games area with compromises made to the regulation dimensions for the court playing area and the position of the goals. Such facilities are intended for training and skills development and for informal recreation.
Due to the weight of the goals and the cantilever between the goal upright and the goal ring with backboard, it is not practical to move the goals without special lifting equipment. For this reason the goal uprights are positioned just off the playing area, out of the way for other sports use of the whole playing surface, or the goals are provided as part of a combination recessed goal structure. As a consequence the length of the basketball playing area on a MUGA usually coincides with the length of the whole playing area, with side lines marked at between 14 and 15 metres apart.
The play lines associated with each goal can either be marked as the current keyway and 3 point line layout or to the new FIBA rules shape and dimensions.
The guidance from England Basketball is that the new line layout should be used for venues used to practice for 2012 Olympics, for venues where national senior men’s and women’s teams compete by 1 October 2012, for national all age competitions, inter regional tournaments and national school competitions by 1st September 2013 and for courts used solely for local school and club competitions by 1st September 2015.
